Every state has a standard child visitation and standard child custody arrangements. Most of the time that is joint custody. In the collaborative process, our mental health professionals help set up a parenting plan. We can look at how the family is currently living, then attempt to continue that in a new form that works for them instead of a major change that the children or the parents are not ready for. I think it also helps to educate our parents about the developmental needs of children so that they can respond appropriately.
